Autumn Front Porch Decor Ideas!

Happy Autumn! Are you beginning to feel the chill in the air? The month of October always makes me think of everything that Fall has to offer – like apple-picking, pumpkin-spiced lattes, Thanksgiving dinners, cozy knit sweaters, red and golden leaves, and of course, my favourite, Hallowe’en! Autumn is also a great time to change up the look of your front porch to embrace the season.  With a few easy-to-find items in your local shops, you can create a warm and welcoming entrance for your family, guests and passersby to enjoy.

Check out how I tackled my own Fall front porch decor this year with a step by step process for simple and affordable decorating solutions!

Step 1:  I filled our black planters with mums!  Mums are such a classic Fall flower and they can be found literally everywhere!  Any colour works – orange, yellow, purple – choose one or mix and match colours of your choosing.  I was feeling the depth and richness of the red.  We have two pots we use year round so that is what I filled. Feel free to use however many pots you want!

Step 2:  Next, I made a quick stop at Canadian Tire and picked up a straw bale for a real harvest look.  I decided on using only one bale but you could definitely grab two or three if you have more space to fill out and don’t mind sweeping up the occasional drifting bits of straw. A straw bale is great because it acts like a pedestal and makes layering your decor at different heights a breeze.

Step 3:  Pumpkins come in so many shapes, colours and textures and they can slide you right into Hallowe’en making them an obvious choice for Fall front porch decor. And what says “Autumn” more than a pumpkin? I went with white and pale pinky-orange pumpkins from our local green grocer. (I will buy the big orange guys later for carving jack-o-lanterns.) These are small to medium in size because I knew I wanted to stack some on top of the straw bale. Consider placing the pumpkins in small groupings and layer them at different heights – you can also do this by trickling them down your front steps.

Step 4: I found this great black metal lantern at Home Sense! It came with the battery-operated flickering candle for easy use and does NOT have glass which is important for outdoors.  Lanterns are a great addition to your front porch decor and they can be used again year after year. If you can find a pair of lanterns in two heights then go ahead and grab ‘em both! But a single larger lantern like this one does the trick! Lanterns are so versatile! Instead of filling them with candles, try using mini pumpkins, dried corn, faux cranberries or any other Fall decor that you can slip inside.

Step 5: I love dried pampas leaves for their earthy feathery texture and total harvest vibe. I found them at a nearby grocery store and decided to layer them next to the mums to add height. I love that they can also easily be used indoors placed in a large vase.

Step 6: On the opposite side of the door I decided to keep the decor super simple with only the potted mums and a pair of pumpkins to balance the entryway. I really wanted to create an asymmetrical look with a vignette on one side. But if you’re feeling it, you can totally do up both sides of your porch!

Decorating your home exterior doesn’t have to be difficult, expensive or full of complicated DIY projects to make it look festive.  I hope I’ve inspired you to add a seasonal touch to your front porch this Fall!
