HINT: No Green-Thumb Required!

I think it’s pretty safe to assume that, as Canadians, we can really appreciate the precious summer months.  Now, as the dark winter days are nearing an end, I find myself looking for ways to invoke some Spring vibes. Today, I reveal how incorporating plants into your home interior design can elevate your style AND give you that fresh Spring/Summer feeling we crave, all year long! HINT: No green-thumb required!

Faux trees are the perfect statement piece for a sophisticated touch.  From adding visual interest to offering a serene atmosphere, faux trees offer a hassle-free way to keep your home feeling fresh and looking elevated.

Sure, having a faux plant won’t give you the full effect of a real one, but they do offer a practical solution, and let’s face it, if you’re going to kill the real one then you’re not really any further ahead, right? So read on for a roundup of my top picks!

Incorporating botanicals, whether real or faux, into your home can add much-needed texture, colour, shape, height, and a sense of movement into your everyday living.

Typically ranging between 5 to 8 feet tall, an indoor tree can be the perfect solution to diversify heights in a room, breaking the monotony when seating and tables are at similar levels.  Use a faux tree in place of wall art or position it in a corner to add vertical interest.

There are many faux tree options out there that fool the eye. To help you get started, I’ve rounded up my three favourite faux trees. (Note that I have no affiliation with these retailers, so go ahead and have fun shopping!)

The Olive Tree

Relaxed and casual in its appeal, the olive tree evokes a soothing vibe reminiscent of California and the Mediterranean. They work beautifully with a soft neutral palette and wood tones. Below are some images taken of a serene principal bedroom we designed for a home in Cedarvale.  The delicate olive tree is nestled in the corner to add colour, texture, and an organic element.

The Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

With its large bold leaves and top-heavy shape, a fiddle leaf fig tree will make your space look lush and luxe!  These trees give off an elegant simplicity with a sculptural form, and since it is a tropical plant, it also feels exotic and sexy.

In the first image, we incorporated the tree into a chic monochromatic living room with a modern, minimal aesthetic. You can really see how much drama and height the tree adds and how well it balances the art on the other side of the window.

The fiddle leaf tree works just as well for our clients who wanted their home interior to be an eclectic mix of traditional meets rustic beach.  Shown here in their living room in Toronto’s east end.

I can’t imagine either of these rooms without their indoor trees!

The Silver Dollar Eucalyptus Tree

With delicate leaves in a slightly blue-ish hue, these plants are “cool” and refreshing.  Known for their unique fragrance, which is said to reduce feelings of stress, it may be worth a visit to your local flower shop to grab some fresh cut sprigs to place in a vase.  I know we are talking all about faux trees, but a fresh cut eucalyptus branch should last several weeks and might just give off that soothing spa scent you need. Shown (above left), on the bedside table in a sculptural vase in our client’s principal bedroom. Shown (above right) as a tree in a living room we recently designed.

Lastly, don’t forget to select a planter for the tree as most of them will come in a small plastic pot with planters sold separately.  Although faux trees are mass produced, each one is unique so it may be worth a trip to the store to pick out the tree that’s right for you.

Whichever you choose, and there are many more than I’ve outlined here, a faux tree will elevate your home interior while bringing an “organic” element into your space without the need for a green thumb or constant runs to the flower shop!
