Before I dive into this month’s hot topic, I’d like to share some exciting news about Mirelle Goren Interiors. About a year ago, I decided to embark on a professional journey through the business of design. I immersed myself and my business in an Interior Design business mentorship program with a team of incredible coaches. Wth a clearly laid out plan every time, our clients can take comfort in knowing what to expect and when. We talk a lot about design for your home interior, but with summer heating up it’s time to address our outdoor spaces as well! Backyard space in the city, no matter the size, can go a long way to serve as a sanctuary during the summer months. If your backyard could use a little TLC this season, or simply needs a refresh, then be sure to keep reading for loads of ideas to make your patio summer-ready. I’ve scoured the world wide web for inspiring backyard patio images and rounded up some of my favourite ideas! Whether your backyard is big or small, we’ve got inspo that is sure to get your creative juices flowing! I’ve even done some of the legwork for you and included shoppable picks! Have fun!
Sofas
Let’s start off with comfortable and stylish seating! If space allows, definitely consider creating a seating zone with a grouping of lounge furniture for easy conversation: a sofa paired with chairs, a sectional, or a pair of sofas flanking one another. Perfect for lounging on your own or for conversations with friends. Opt for plush cushions and accent pillows in indoor/outdoor fabrics.
Egg Chairs
Who doesn’t love a good egg chair? Not only do they make you want to climb on in and cozy up, their round shape offers a sculptural element to your backyard design. Bonus: the wicker material is a great texture to mix into your space.
Outdoor Rugs
Complete your lounge seating with an outdoor rug! Outdoor rugs are a great way to define a seating area and make the outdoors feel more welcoming. When selecting an area rug think about how it might inject a little pattern, texture or even colour into your design. Choose one made of polypropylene or vinyl so that it is weather-proof and easy to clean.
Side Tables
Let’s not forget about the importance of side tables in your seating area! Where else would we put our cocktails?

Fire Pits
For those cool summer evenings and well into the Fall, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of a crackling bonfire under the stars while adding warmth and intimacy to your patio design. Surround the fire pit with comfortable seating to create a captivating focal point for socializing and relaxation. So what are you waiting for? Bust out the marshmallows for a s’more of a good time.
Mood Lighting
Nothing creates that dreamy vibe quite like a canopy of string lights. These are an easy and affordable way to add ambience to stretch out those endless summer nights. Go for the style with edison bulbs like the kind shown here. Layer in some lanterns (opt for the battery-operated candles) to elevate your space.
Planters
Planters and pots filled with flowers and greenery are an easy way to infuse your backyard patio with natural charm, even if you have limited garden space. These versatile accents add texture, colour, and life to your patio design, creating a lush oasis in even the smallest of spaces. Experiment with different plant varieties, heights, and arrangements to create visual interest and dimension.
Daybeds
Now this is a luxurious lounge-worthy spot if I ever saw one! A daybed with a canopy blowing in the breeze is so soothing it just oozes relaxation. I can’t think of a more inviting place to unwind.
Dining Tables
Of course it isn’t summer without dining al fresco! Opt for a dining set or mix and match with different chairs. Whether you prefer intimate gatherings or grand soirées, a well-appointed dining area sets the stage for memorable culinary experiences. Choose a table that complements your patio aesthetic, whether it’s rustic farmhouse chic or sleek and contemporary. Pair with comfortable seating to create an inviting atmosphere for alfresco feasts and conversations that last well into the night.
Water Features
For a serene, spa-like effect, consider adding a water feature to your backyard patio design. A water feature is like a moving sculpture and brings a sense of tranquility and serenity to your outdoor oasis. From bubbling fountains to quiet ponds, there are many options to suit your space and style.
Pergolas
Create an escape from the sun with a freestanding pergola. These provide both shade and style, offering a respite from the heat while infusing your patio with an architectural focal point. Adorn your pergola with climbing vines, string lights, or sheer curtains to create an enchanting atmosphere. Look for one that includes LED strip lighting so you can illuminate your space with the click of a button.
Now that I’ve armed you with loads of inspiration on how to transform your backyard patio into a sophisticated and inviting outdoor oasis, I hope you will embrace the spirit of summer and let your imagination soar.
